Now at TopPigeons Auction Part 2 MAAS BROSS ZUNDERT THE NETHERLANDS

Written by TEAM TOPPIGEONS - 2/22/2012
Maas Brothers & Son, Zundert, North-Brabant.
The proud owners of the legendary
“Goldrush Farm”

The mention of this combination will ring bells in the ears of all long distance fanciers, their thoughts going back to a really tough Pau race of several years ago. It was in 2001 that these fanciers won the toughest race ever from Pau with their ‘Armstrong’ . This Muscleman beat friend and foe (2.772 pigeons) under extremely tough conditions of tropical heat and headwinds winning 1st National and 4th in the International convoy of 7.841 pigeons. These fanciers have put their trust in an auction on TopPigeons ensuring their birds get the attention they deserve to a guaranteed massive audience.
It is obviously surplus to introduce these fanciers again after all they have achieved. Despite this I will give them a short introduction. They consist of two brothers, Wim and Cor Maas and Cor’s son Jacko. The brothers Cor and Wim have possessed pigeons since their childhood but we must conclude that the last few years they compete at the highest level. Cor and his son are responsible for running the pigeon lofts while Wim runs the business of selling plants.
Like so many other fanciers they started with the sprint, middle distance and one day distance races. After switching to the National afternoon liberations and the International morning liberations they soon became fanciers to be reckoned with amidst the national toppers of that discipline.

Proof enough to be found but let’s first mention the National wins.
1st National Pau 2001
1st National Mont de Marsan 2009
1st National Perpignan Hens 2006
1st National Bordeaux N.P.O. 1999

An Overview of top marking’s.
Beside the four National wins the combination won the following early prizes.
2nd National Perpignan 2006, 2nd National Narbonne 2011 (Hens.), 4th National Pau 2010,
4th National Dax 2006, 4th National Bergerac 2008, 5th National Bergerac 2008,
9th National Barcelona 2006, 13th National Bordeaux 2006, 13th National Narbonne 2009,
13th National Perpignan 2009 etc. etc.

When I asked Jacko to show me some references, his reply was short and distinct “Johan, we have never been commercial about that”.

Observing what they breed and the lines the birds to be auctioned are bred from it won’t be long before other fanciers become successful with these pigeons.

The First break through.
After getting some excellent marking’s, in 1998 the first real break-through occurred in the ZLU races by winning the following championships:
1st Champion Super Prestige Z.L.U.,
3rd General Champion Z.L.U.,
4th Keizer Long Distance Z.L.U. and
12th Champion Grand Prix Z.L.U.

The Pigeons and origins of their success.
Relating to the fore said, to get four National wins it takes beside an amazing amount of input, good lofts of course and quality pigeons capable of winning. Listening to their story it is clear that choices were made to acquire good pigeons at all costs. Every three years they bought a round of youngsters from top fanciers they had observed for a long time. These birds were mated to the best birds in their own loft. The youngsters bred from them were thoroughly tested and selected. We can conclude that in this way a superior strain of performing pigeons were formed.

De origin.
The origin of this loft goes back to the pigeons of the late Mr. Biemans and the van der Wegen strain. By cross breeding these birds as mentioned above, birds were born like the legendary “Armstrong”. His father is a van der Wegen cock whereas the mother is a full sister of the well known ‘Joop” without doubt one of the best long distance pigeons ever to have flown in Holland. This giant won a 3rd National St. Vincent 16.629 p., 6th National Dax 25.473 p., 14th National Bergerac 20.685 p.,
14th National Dax 13.308 p., 44th National Bergerac 19.069 p., 44th National Bergerac 19.304 p.
But also names like W. Muller (Corrie 1st National Perpignan Hens), Kurvers-de Weerd / H & R Wijnands / H. Verhellen are to be found in the pedigrees of some of the top breeders like; “Cor”, “Blauwe Marathon”, “Wondere Wijnands” .

Some great results were booked by the Maas Bros. & Son. The closing race of the season from Perpignan shows this.
